girl drinking milkDo you remember my post about rBGH in our milk? If not you should check it out and watch the video there. rBGH is banned throughout most of the world because of its link to cancer but not in the good old US of A. Monsanto, the maker of this synthetic growth hormone used to increase milk production in cows, has been able to buy their way into FDA hearts and the American food chain but health minded consumers have fought back…and we are gaining ground!

What have we been able to accomplish? Well, Starbucks, Chipoltle, and many supermarket chains have been pressuring and/or demanding that milk suppliers stop using rBGH in order to satisfy consumer demand. According to The Organic Consumers Organization, 80% of consumers are concerned about artifical hormones in their food and I bet Monsanto is is plenty mad as those consumers work to drive rBGH right off the market.

Some fast facts:

* California banned the use of rBGH and accounts for 8% of the US milk supply.

* All milk produced in Oregon is now produced without rBGH.

* The national Kroger grocery store chain (westerners might know them as Frys) has declared that rBGH products will be banned as of February 2008.

* In May, Publix Super Markets with 900 stores went rBST free in its branded milk products.

You see we CAN vote with our dollars and influence the market to provide safer alternatives! For more information about this whole drama visit the OCO link above.

I noticed that the store-brand milk at my local big box grocery states that they do not use rGBH, but I still stick to my organic milk. After all I’ve read, non-organic dairy products scare the snot out of me.
