    Tiffany,

When you say “taken regularly” what do you mean? Every day forever? We (my family) usually do take echinacea when we start to feel like we are getting a cold, but don’t take it every day. Are we doing it right? LOL

    :)

Tsoniki, I think some of these could be taken regularly or daily like garlic but some others would best be used as needed, like the echinacea. I use echinacea in my family whenever we have been exposed to illness or if we are feeling run down and tired and therefore are more susceptible to illness. These are just some natural suggestions for healing your body. :)

I have heard that the best way to use echinacea is one week on, one week off. it is classified as a “medicinal” herb, as opposed to a nutritional or food herb. You need to give the body a rest from it.

I grew my own organic garlic this year, it was soooo simple! Just shove a clove in the ground in November, then pull out an entire bulb for your kitchen in July/August. I use several cloves every day in my cooking.

Be careful of echinacea if you are pregnant or trying to conceive. I had taken it for a cold before I realized I was pregnant, and I ended up having what’s called a blighted ovum, which means the fetus dies after the 6th week but does not miscarry from your body until weeks later. In my case, 14 weeks. I did some research and they have linked echinacea to blighted ovums so I would consult your doctor.

Echinacea should be used with caution by people who are allergic to ragweed or to plants in the sunflower family. There are some claims that a combination of echinacea and goldenseal boots our immune system and have been found by laboratory experiments with animals which shows that the two herbs augment different but they complement the immune globulins.

Before anyone takes echinacea + goldenseal combination, be sure to read all the precautions listed. Also on another note, echinacea should be avoided immediately before, during and after any organ transplantation if your doctor has prescribed a drug such as cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune) or tacrolimus (prograf), these drugs are prescribed to prevent transplant rejection.

Some benefits of echinacea and some specific health conditions this herb is used for are acne and infected nails; CFS (chronic fatique syndrom; yeast infections; colds, cough, influenza and strep thoat; e. angustifolia (latin name Echinacea angustinfolia and Echinacea purpurea) is helpful with ear infections and e. purpurea is helpful and used for lyme disease and parasitic infection.

As mentioned in the above comments, if ou are trying to get pregnant, it is probably best NOT to take echinacea. Any of the echinacea species contain a substance that can interfere with the release of unfertilized eggs into the fallopian tube and will decrease a women’s fertility.
