The use of chemicals and synthetic ingredients in personal care items has been a concern of mine for a long time now. I am especially concerned about the abundance of these products on the market that are for babies and young children. Conventionally available products such as bubble bath, baby powder, baby lotion, and even disposable wipes all contain chemicals and synthetic ingredients that are unhealthy for our children. For a long time I have sought out products that are made with 100% natural and organic ingredients for myself and especially for my kids. I often wondered about taking matters into my own hands and making these products myself but I really didn’t know where to start.

The answer I was looking for came to me recently in the form of a wonderful book called Homemade Baby, written by Jennifer A. Casey, a Canadian mom and entrepreneur. This book is a great resource for natural minded moms!

It starts out by explaining why we need to be concerned with what is in the products we expose our children to and even mentions many of the culprit chemicals and why each of them is toxic and in which products they can be found. After this brief lesson, the book goes on to explain which types of ingredients we WANT in baby care products and why. Many natural ingredients are discussed at length, including details about their origin, properties, common uses, and safety.

Of course the most useful section of the book is the second half which gives complete recipes and instructions for products such as baby wipe solution, bath milk and bath fizzies, bath melts, Colic tummy rub, diaper pail deodorizers, and aromatherapy hot/cold packs. And these are just a sampling of the natural products and remedies that are addressed.

I found this book to be a must read for parents who want to care for their children naturally. Even if you have no desire to make the products yourself the education value of this book is wonderful also. But I know I can not resist trying a few of the delectable product recipes for my children and even for myself the cocoa butter bath melts sound heavenly. This book is a must read for all moms!

I agree totally. Last week I threw out all my baby’s personal care products and replaced them with certified organic products.

I cannot understand why any person would want to apply industrial chemicals to their baby’s skin! I think many people have blind faith in the manufacturer’s integrity. I made that mistake too - trusting that they would manufacture safe baby products.

Would definitely reade Homemade Baby. Thanks for the tip.

Baby wipes are another product that you are sure to use every day. Why not make them yourself? You will save money, and your baby’s delicate skin will thank you.

I am glad to post my views and points in this blog, but I must say that webmaster of this blog has done a very great job to make his blog more informative and more discussable but unfortunately everthing is same here that more than 80% in this and other blogs post their comments for making spam!!!, so i will really all this spam links to google band tool, because webmaster makes blogs for making discuss and for sloving each other problems. thanks http://www.gordoniihoodia.net

You know, I’m practically convinced that all my allergy problems I used to suffer with (it’s getting better now, though) was actually the result of all the products and chemicals I used to be exposed to as a child. I mean, I don’t want us to become paranoid about everything, but I’m sure what was available in the 80’s was nowhere near as safe as what you can get these days. I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of that stuff is what gave me allergic reactions that I’ve had to deal with for life!

Thank you for sharing this information to us. We’ve been making baby portraits for years and one of the issues that we had with parent-clients is the use of some commercial products such as baby wipes and some sprays or even make up for babies who will serve as our model. We’re not just concerned about our products and so I thought you will be the most reliable person to ask regarding this matter.

We can’t do away with the use of some sprays or make up whenever we do the painting job especially if we’re not doing it from photos. Please help us on this.
